Such a theory was not entirely novel; Irenaeus, for instance, urged it in an unsuccessful attempt to settle thepaschal controversy. But as local customs became fixedthe theory was more and more invoked, and it finallybecame a settled principle throughout Christendom. The9fourth century was here the definite turning point; whenthe ecumenical councils met, they made no attempt tolegislate in full details for the whole church. So when thecompiler of the Apostolic Constitutions ca. 375 revived theChurch Order formula that made all the apostles legislateminutely, we may presume that he was consciously adoptinga style that was already somewhat obsolescent; Christiansby now were becoming aware that collective apostolicauthority could not be claimed for so wide an extent ofregulations. And this consciousness brought with it theeventual end of the Church Orders; they were replaced byexplicitly local collections of canons and by liturgical servicebooks. Yet in many parts of the church the old ChurchOrders retained their authority, and they were incorporatedinto the manuals of canon law.
Similarly, true apostolic practices leave their mark on thechurch. If the dorean principle was practiced by the apostles in the firstcentury, we should expect to see traces of this practice in the second century.Even if the church experienced times of radical transition, we should expect tosee some evidence of this ethic. I believe that when we look to the pages ofhistory, that is exactly what we find.
Flash forward to the Protestant Reformation. In thefirst three centuries of the church, we see the ripples and echoes of thedorean principle in play, but the sixteenth century concerns us for analtogether different reason. The eventual corruption of the church had led to adegradation in fundraising practices. Rather than having the opportunity tomaintain the apostolic practice, the Reformers found themselves saddled withthe task of restoring a biblical view of money. In fact, while the Reformationcentered around the doctrines of Scripture and salvation, the relationshipbetween money and ministry was arguably the primary catalyst of theReformation.
Looking back on the pages of history, we see that the second-centurychurch maintained the apostolic practice of the dorean principle. Moreover, they understood this ethic to be a Scriptural precept, defending it largelyfrom the gospel of Matthew. Unlike Bigfoot, the teaching of the doreanprinciple in the first-century church left traces in the following century thatcorroborate its prevalence among the churches founded by the apostles.
Right now the church is doing a poor job releasing these types of people into the mission. We have very little language and definition for these roles. When was the last time you heard a message at church about the apostolic, prophetic or evangelistic people
